garam masala

such a wondrous spice. while i was deciding what to put on my oats this morning i caught sight of the jar and knew that somehow i needed to incorporate some garam masala.


so my oat bran today was tropically inspired--garam masala, dried mangos, and marmalade.

here's how i did it:

to cook oat bran, bring 2 cups water and a dash of salt to a boil. then, slowly stir in 2/3 cup oat bran. cook for 2 minutes and then remove from heat, cover, and let sit for 2 more minutes. transfer to a bowl and add your favorite fixins.

to mine i added...
*1/2 (or maybe a little bit less) tsp garam masala, just enough so you can taste it but its not too strong
*dash of vanilla
*marmalade
*a pat of earth balance
*dried mangos
*pecans
*rice milk
*sugar, to taste


i love how adding dried fruit to hot oats gives them life back- after a few minutes, the mangos turned soft and luscious.



 also love the little specks of color from the orange zest. a perfectly lovely start to the weekend.
